Just after my post on Friday, I got a slew of emails with custom requests. NOW I'm BUSY!!! This was one of my favorites for the week. A fun 3 year Old's World Traveler Birthday Party. Each guest will be receiving their very own little suitcase to travel with during the party. They're headed to PARIS, CHINA, HOLLYWOOD & NY. Now THAT would be so fun to see :)

I was in charge of creating some fun passport/luggage stickers that the kiddos will decorate their suitcases with as they travel to their destinations.

SO...last night - WAIT! - let me preface this by saying how wonderful my new SUPER-CHARGED router is! Since the upgrade, I have seriously been whipping through the internet, zipping through emails, designing, blogging, networking and just plain finishing work in HALF the time it took before! THANK YOU, hubby for my Christmas present (oh, and the rest of my Dell Studio Upgrades are in the mail WOO HOO!). Now that I can stay on top of orders and actually close at normal Studio Hours, I have my nights on the couch with my lovey back!!!

Now, like I was saying...last night, the hubby and I were chatting while catching up on DVR-ed Parenthoods and he asked...

hubby: Do you like what you do?

me: Yes, why?

hubby: I mean if I had the opportunity to stay home like you, I'd be sleeping in and lounging on the couch!

me: I HAVE that option?! (the wheels started to turn)

hubby: Well, I'm just sayin'...you really like what you do and would still do it if I told you, you didn't have to?

me: Yes, I LOVE my work! It's my THING. As time consuming and stressful as it can be, it's my way to be ME. It's a product of my own doing. I LOVE IT! (Although, the couch option sounds pretty good too!)

That conversation really got me thinking, maybe I've been stressing out here and there for no reason. I've been taking my schedule too seriously when there's no pressure from anyone but myself. I think it's time to slow down a bit and get back to why I started this whole business...so I could be ME not ME be the business.

Thanks for the perspective, Hubby! Now don't be mad if you get home from work and I'm on the couch in my pj's eating bon bon's!

And here's one of our Family's Favorites for all you last minute bakers out there.

CHOCOLATE CARAMEL COOKIES

1 c. butter (2 sticks - softened)

1 c. sugar

1 c. brown sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2 1/2 c. flour

1 tsp baking soda

3/4 c. cocoa powder

. . .

2 T. granulated sugar (to roll dough in)

48 Rolo Candies

Cream butter & sugars until smooth.

Add eggs & vanilla.

Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl: flour, baking soda & cocoa powder

Gradually add dry mixture to butter mixture. Beat until completely combined and chill cookie dough in fridge for 2 hours.

After chilled, roll heaping tsp. of dough into ball then flatten with palm of hand. Insert a rolo candy (unwrapped for all you literal peeps out there) into the center and reform ball around candy. Dip dough into granulated sugar and place on cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 for 8 minutes, cool on sheet for 2 mins, then remove to cool...ENJOY!!!

STUDIO UPDATES

Well, if you know me, which some of you do all too well...now THAT'S scary :) I can NOT for the life of me pull myself away from my work. Sure, my family comes first. Being Mommy, Wife, Soccer Mom, School Library Volunteer...etc. that's always on the top of my list! But any down time, I'm strapped to my laptop honkered down in my Studio designing, proofing, printing, packaging in hopes that I achieve ultimate AWESOMENESS in customer service as well as uber quality control. Sadly to say, this has taken a toll on my physical well-being and not condusive to a healthy lifestyle. Go figure, who thought one NEEDED to sleep?! If I don't want to be a slave to the perpetual headache, some changes have to made!

SOOO...

after repeated requests from a handful of doctors AND the all-knowing Dr. HUBBY, I will be sticking to my posted Studio Hours ONLY. No more 24/7 schedule allowed for me. Whereas, the AWESOMENESS will definitely be top priority, lightening-speed email responses may be a thing of the past and have to wait a few more hours 'til morning. So, thanks for your patience and who knows, this adjustment might actually make things run a lot smoother. We shalll see!

Simple DIY :: Twine Pansy

In case you missed it over at The Twinery Blog, here's a quick and easy way to spruce up those packages.

So cute & so simple!

Nicole from The Twinery was sweet enough to contact me for a tutorial and I was more than happy to oblige! How could I NOT after receiving this boxful of goodies! Now THAT'S one generous gal! Thanks again, Nicole!!!!

So, here's the "HOW-TO"...

Step 1: Choose your favorite Twinery shade...our NEW favorite is their Honeydew!!!

Be sure to cut a large enough piece of twine - I find if you wrap the twine around the item at least 4 times, that's usually plenty.

Step 2: Start as if you were wrapping a gift, wrapping the twine around the middle, then crossing it on the back, continuing around the opposite sides to meet in the front again.

Step 3: When meeting the two ends in the front, tuck them under the twine that lays vertically across the middle...see photo.

Step 4: Tie a simple "half" square knot & pull tight.

Step 5: Tie a standard bow pulling tight to secure loops.

Step 6: Repeat Step 5 two more times but this time be careful not to pull too tightly (which will unravel the previous bows).

Step 7: Trim ends and VOILA, there you have it. A sweet little package that's Pretty as a Pansy!

Simple as that!

I'm a big fan of Smiling! Whether, I'm the one doing the smiling or, better yet, the only making someone else smile! There's no greater feeling than knowing you made someone's day a little brighter. It's definitely a win win situation all around.

When I read that my wonderful friend, Shauna, from Lemon Kissed was conducting a little kindness project of her own, I jumped at the opportunity to spread the love...Lemon Kissed Love, that is!

As said by Shauna herself, "...being nice feels nice".

MEET & GREET :: KRISTIN KANE of LATHER SOAP CO.

Kristin Kane is our Meet & Greet today and, by now, I'm sure you know I adore my big sister. She's my best friend in the world (aside from you, hubby! Don't want to step on any toes here). We thrive off of each others ideas and have a blast brainstorming. She's one of the strongest, smartest gals I know and can do ANYTHING!

I obviously know I thing or two about Kristin...why don't you sit back and get to know her too?!

Tell us a little about Lather Soap Co. and how you got started.

Well, Lather Soap Co. is brandy new and I really feel like we are still getting started! Shortly after the new year, ideas and opportunity collided. I am sure that's how it is for many moms starting their own company and I am lucky enough to have a partner in crime, Andi Burkholder. The last 4 years I spent helping run my kids' PTA and two of those years Andi was right beside me; either supporting or leading, this year we decided to take a break. . . but a busy mom can only sit still for so long. It was been so exciting to take on this venture but even more fun to take it on with a good friend.

Right now Lather Soap Co. is working on a line of soap products that the consumer can purchase for either gifts or favors. We have been focusing on the children's line first, mainly because it's so fun. :) We are also working on some spa soaps and have been pairing with some individuals to help raise awareness for specific groups that are close to our heart.

What's a typical "Kristin Day" like?

Ok, ok, not sure if there is a day I would call typical, but if you were to join me for a day I would recommend a positive mind set to include patience and flexibility. Oh and a strong cup of coffee wouldn't hurt.

Being a Mom of THREE, how do you balance work and family?

Let me see what the definition of balance would be, everybody fed, clothed, and happy? Yup, I think I can do it. :) Since the business is fairly new and we are trying to get it off the ground, I have been sneaking in as much time as possible into Lather Soap Co. If I am not experimenting with new scents, molds or ideas; I am spending time marketing and researching the business online. I am very lucky to have a supportive hubby who helps with the kids and will drop off local deliveries or head to the post office for me.

What's your main source of inspiration for creating your soap?

Inspiration comes from so many places. One, being a mom, I am always thinking of kids, and kid related things. For example, the schools in our area have banned the kids from bringing in treats to share with their classmates for special occasions, like birthdays. So as a mom, here are the choices, don't send in anything (and that stinks for everyone) or find some trinket in a 25 quantity that is almost as fun as a cupcake in the middle of a school day. Viola! The inspiration for our sweetcakes ducky soap, but why just duckies; how about monsters or sea creatures.

Some of the other sources of inspiration come from raising awareness for causes bigger than us. Our breast cancer support ribbon soap will directly impact a registered team walking in the Susan G Koman 3 day walk this fall. And just this week I received our autism puzzle piece mold and we will begin experimenting in the next couple of days to come up with a soap that we will be proud to support Autism Speaks.

What's one thing you couldn't live without?

I would definitely say my books/kindle. This is how I end my day and without them I don't think I would be able to shut my brain off and rest. A little time for myself even if it is a page or two to escape into another world and relax.

{What a sweet little family!}

Tell us a little about Preschool Doll Designs and how you got started.

PreschoolDoll Designs really began to take shape when I began teaching preschool. To save money, I was always making my own classroom supplies, and my co-workers would ask where I bought them at. When I told them I made the items, they were always shocked. That's when I first began to realize I may be on to something.

With the birth of our son Preston (Feb. 2010), my husband and I decided I would stay home with him. Being someone who always likes a project, I soon found myself bored and needing "something else". With my husband's support and encouragement, PreschoolDoll Designs was officially born! The name comes from my preschool background (of course), and because I am such a doll, I thought the two worked perfectly!

I opened up shop at the end of March 2010, with the initial goal to supply preschool teachers and daycare providers with affordable classroom supplies (since they usually spend out of pocket for extras)! I also wanted to target stay at home moms, by offering educational activities to prepare their children for preschool. Over the past year, things have quickly evolved, and I now find myself part of the birthday party scene. I couldn't be more thrilled!

What's a typical "Crystal Day" like?

I'm one lucky momma. My son's a sleeper, so we usually get up around 10. He eats breakfast, and then he plays, while I quickly check in with the shop. I'll answer any customer e-mails, set up any reserved listing requests and try to get a Facebook post in. After, I feed him lunch and put him down for a nap. That's when I finally get my shower and take any new product photos I need to. I also try to do a pan of crayons and clean the house (usually one room a day) and work on any decorating project I may have going. When he wakes, we do a Post Office run to mail packages. My husband is usually home soon after. He likes to cook, so I usually don't argue and let him make dinner! Soon after, Preston goes to sleep, and I get to work. This is when I write item descriptions, catch back up on e-mails, list new items, and make crayons! My day typically ends around 3 am! This may sound crazy to some, but I've always been a "night owl". When people ask what I do, I just say I work third shift from home!

Being a Mom, how do you balance work and family?

This is probably the toughest thing for me! I tend to be a perfectionist, and remodeling our bungalow is a big passion of mine. My husband constantly reminds me that our house doesn't always have to be "magazine ready", so since PreschoolDoll Designs entered our lives, I've really had to learn to let the little things go. I am now more able to let a sink of dishes sit there a little longer, so I can read a book to my son! We also make a point to eat dinner together every night, and we try to make Saturdays "family day" and get out of the house together to do something fun!

What's one thing you couldn't live without?

Diet Coke is my "coffee". I wouldn't be able to function without it, but Burt's Bees lip balm is my other must-have product! I fear Preston may already be addicted to it. He won't let me apply it without giving him a little too!

I'd like to introduce you to another one of my favorite friends I've met in the biz...Bridgett Edwards. I remember distinctly when we met. I was on vacation and snuck in a little laptop time in between beach-hopping and to my surprise, Bridgett had posted one of my photos on her blog. Well, of course, that meant she became an instant friend :)

I later found out just how talented this gal was. She's one fabulous designer (and a major multi-tasker) you should see what this lady accomplishes in a day ~ When she's not working full-time, caring for her family, designing/selling stationery for Perideau Designs, she's creating custom branding for other companies ~ Frankly, I don't know how she does it all!

So, sit back and get to know a little more about the lovely Mrs. Edwards!

Tell us a little about Perideau Designs and how you got started.

I started Perideau Designs in 2009 in hopes to bring simple, stylish and timeless designs to the online world. With my love of personalization I fell in love with personalized stationery, invitations and now party gift bags.

What's a typical "Bridgett Day" like?

Wake up at 4:45 (crazy I know!) to work out at home and then drop the little one off to school and I head to my 9-5. After dinner with the family, which I make a point of having every night, I head to my "office" to work. Unless it's Tuesday then I'm glued to Glee. And I work up until 11/12am with finishing up the day by planning for the next one. Rinse and repeat.

Being a Mom, working full-time, starting your new Bridgett Edwards venture (I don't know how you do it) How do you balance work and family?

We're still working this part out but communication is key. I'm naturally organized so I plan my days out down to the outfit, workout clothes and lunch the night before. I plan my weekly dinners using my personalized weekly dinner menus. It's all about planning, communicating and loving what you do. If you found your passion everything else will fall into place...with a lot of hard work.

What do you like more...designing for paper or branding?

Oh gosh I love them both! Can I say that? I love designing paper products because I know I've been a part of so many birthday parties, baby showers and events. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. And branding is so very rewarding! Getting to the heart and soul of a business and have the ability to bring that to life is beyond amazing. Something I absolutely adore doing.

How do you keep your designs fresh and appealing? What is your main source of inspiration?

My customers, first and foremost. I listen to each and every feedback and suggestion I get and figure out a way to make it happen. I also love looking through children's clothing magazines and home decor to find an element I think would look amazing as a birthday invitation or a notecard. It's all about keeping your eyes open because inspiration can be found anywhere.
